So, we’re in, and loving the new space. The move-in night went fantastic; we had about 10 people helping us, and Bunny’s room and half the kitchen got all unpacked that night. The week afterward went anything but smoothly (which means that the short story is that Andres, Bunny and I all got the stomach flu the day after we moved in) All in all, the transition was not quite as smooth as we had hoped but overall, we’re glad to be in our new home. We all have things that we’re getting used to in the space. Bunny is getting used to being at home everyday, rather than at daycare. This along with still feeling a bit under the weather has had her quite grumpy and wanting to go “home” in the “brrm brrm” I don’t have my painting space up and running yet, and as you can see by the pictures, we have our furniture in, but we haven’t put pictures up or bought some new decor yet. So while the house is feeling like our house because of our things, it isn’t feeling like “home” yet either. Generally I am a person easily busied with hobbies or reading etc, but I have felt a bit out of sorts as well. Being 10 days from my due date prevents me from being on my feet too much, so I can’t even realistically do a lot of baking or kitchenny stuff right now. I have been plopped on the couch quite a bit lately Andres has been installing things here and there with his dad and my dad when he has had any extra energy. I had forgotten how much work moving was, and had not considered how much extra work it would be with a toddler, and being pregnant. I’m glad it’s over and we’re in!

Boxes Boxes Boxes!

We are moving tomorrow, and are at the “pack what you can!” point. There is so much that we have that is difficult to put in a box because we use it so often. Clothes are difficult to “put away” even if we will end up finding them within a couple days. Toys are a difficult thing to pack, because what’s a kid to do with no toys?! And I won’t even begin to talk about the kitchen. The bathroom? Toothbrushes are a daily must-do, and I’m on the world’s top 10 list of people with difficult hair, which means a wash and blow-dry each morning … more stuff that I NEED and can’t put in a box. That leaves pictures and bookshelves Luckily for me, I have a husband who is logical and can make difficult scenarios like moving easier than first thought (or panic!) First, we made a grocery and meal list for the week. That way, I knew what dishes I was making and what pots / pans I would be using, as well as which ingredients I wanted to keep available. I also felt positive about the fact that we wouldn’t be eating out every night of the week; there would be some healthy options every day. The rest of the pantry was gone through and besides some snacks and breakfast items that were plopped on the counter, put away into accessible boxes “just in case.” I also gave in to Andres’ reasoning that I didn’t need 100+ cups / mugs in my cupboard. If people were going to come visit me, probably 10 would do So, we packed up a lot of the glassware and plates. Second, we did a bit at a time. We did start with the bookshelves and closets, and did a few boxes each day. We left things out that we figured would be used within a week’s time and the rest got stuffed. My Bunny’s toys were meticulously gone through and half were kept out for her to play with (the favourites of course) while the other ones “disappeared” once she was in bed. It is pretty obvious that she has no idea that some of her things were highjacked Mr. Potato Head is a pro at entertaining for a LONG time! Third, put out an email to our friends asking if they might be able to help us with some of the bigger ticket items. We got an overwhelming response; I think we are going to have 7+ men around to help with boxes / furniture. The amount of people around to help was a bit of a relief for me, who, being 37 weeks pregnant, really had no chance of lifting ANYTHING. Goodness, going up the stairs is getting difficult! Fourth, and I don’t know if this is a helpful point or not, but we left our Bunny’s room pretty much untouched until we HAD TO. She is very much a routine-oriented little girl, and we wanted to make sure that her space was the same as long as possible. Tomorrow morning while she is at daycare, her room will be No. 1 priority to get moved from, and to, the new house as fast as possible. Lastly, and don’t judge me! We aren’t worrying about cleaning until everything is packed. Our home for the past week in particular, has been a bit of a pig-sty. The only thing we tried really hard to keep on top of were the dishes, so that we would have clean pots / pans to work with each day.

I know that tomorrow is going to be a BUSY day but I think with our plans in place, overall, it will go pretty smoothly. Here’s hoping! I will post pictures of the new house as soon as it looks decent Wish us luck!

Another Year Past

It’s hard to believe that another year has gone by. I’ll never get that time back, what’s done is done. Am I happy with how 2011 turned out? I think so! I’ve been encouraged by a couple bloggers to focus on the positives lately, and I think for the most part, I can do that easily. Yes there have been tough moments, we all have them. However, I do find that they are easily forgotten when something good happens, especially when it’s spontaneous. For example …

I was in the Tim Horton’s Drive-thru the other day, and someone bought my bagel for me.

The last day of work before our holiday break was relaxing and, dare I say it, fun?!

I got some screaming deals BEFORE boxing day!

We drove up to my folks house for New Years, and my kid slept for an hour on the way.

My kid LOVES looking at Christmas lights. (This is a real plus for me, as I personally enjoy it so much myself)

I have been feeling better the last couple days, after feeling big enough to pop!

As you can see in the above picture, I found some time to do some painting, and it felt great to tap into my artistic side again. This picture was a concept image for a Christmas present I was commissioned to do. I haven’t done any snow pictures since last year (which makes sense) but I love how this one turned out – so colourful! The white snow always makes for such a nice background for the Wobble bright colours. Also, winter attire lends itself to a wobbly style quite nicely since hats and scarves can twist and bend into unique shapes and pom-poms are fun any way you paint them! Wow, it has been quite a while since I posted a painting. I have one more yet to post, and then this blog will probably quiet down for another month or two while we move and, moreover, get used to our new baby, nicknamed “Ducky” for the purposes of this website, who arrives in February.

The Peppernut Party

Last night was a somewhat of a first for me. Christmas baking has always happened around my house and since I’ve gotten married, I do most of it myself. When I was young of course my mom, my sister, and often, my grama were around. While we made lots of different things each year, peppernuts were always, ALWAYS on the recipe ‘to make’ list. My mom started them a tradition before I really remember, but we always had these cookies around. They take FOREVER, but their taste is totally worth it. The last couple years I’ve tried to make them myself, and while I’ve made a couple pan-fulls, I haven’t gotten through even a 1/4 of the dough that one recipe makes. The reason it takes so long? These cookies are no bigger than your thumbnail. I posted about them here last year; I was so proud of the fact that I had even attempted to make them. This year though, I had a reality check. I’m pregnant, tired, and have a toddler. As much as I wanted to make this traditional cookie for my loved ones at home to munch and crunch on, I couldn’t do it myself. So, I called up some friends and asked if they would be interested in having a ‘peppernut’ party with me. I would supply the dough, and they would supply some of the labour required. It took four of us 3 1/2 hours and a couple of Christmas CDs to accomplish the monumental task but we all left with some yummy goodies, and I was left feeling more than Christmassy. Thank you girls for helping! Now, not to eat them ALL in the next couple days! Do you do any specific baking each year?
